Practical Advice for Seniors to Enjoy the Spring Season

Spring. It’s the joyous season of nature’s rebirth, symbolizing new beginnings and growth. It’s the perfect time to get outside and get active, especially if you live in a chilly climate where winter takes a toll. But before you sprint out the door, take heed of these spring tips to remain safe and healthy all year through.

Spring Cleaning With Purpose

Many people are compelled to refresh their surroundings in the spring. It’s not a bad idea. When you declutter an area, you’re removing potential mold, dust and bacteria while also opening up and clearing walkways to help prevent falls. Plus, since our brains crave novelty, even a minor refresh can help boost your mood.

Sunshine and Pollen

Whether your passion is gardening, hitting the walking trails, or rocking on the porch, the great outdoors brings us rejuvenating sunshine, which can brighten your spirits, strengthen your bones, and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Of course, too much sun can damage your skin, and you can get dehydrated more quickly. So, suit up with sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and water. If you’re out and about, tell someone where you’re going -- or better yet, bring a friend. Finally, if you’re prone to allergies, consider a mask to mitigate the impact of that pollen.

Seasonal Checks

Many people make it a point to assess the conditions of various household items in the spring. If you haven’t already got a working plan, then make a point to do the following. (And remember, before you climb on that ladder, consider hiring a handyman to handle any tasks up high!)

  • Change the smoke alarm batteries.
  • Replace expired food, vitamins, supplements and medications.
  • Replace the air filters in the HVAC system.
  • Clean out the gutters.
  • Check your emergency kit supplies.

Rejuvenating Your Living Spaces

Your spaces need to work for you. And your needs change over time. Evaluate your highest risk spots, and invest in your safety. Whether it’s handrails, brighter lighting, or sturdy gardening stools, optimizing your space for your safety is a perfect way to kick off spring. Don’t let another season go by. Now’s the season to increase mobility. Remember, summer is just around the corner!
